      G D
We grew up next to a funeral parlor

Death was always close by
        G D G
When my brother Lon was a boy he'd hang out over there
C G
all the time

G D G C
So before he was grown he'd seen more death then most people ever will see

G
But he was the only boy the Undertaker could get to help and
D G C G
out and hell that was no paper route that's a scary place to be

G D G
So the undertakers apprentice grew up and turned 20 and he
                        C G
went off to to new york city to be come a mortician now they all
D G C G
thought he was crazy to be what he wanted to be

G D G
When the Vietnam war came along he got drafted the only
                                  C G
reason he didn't go over there to die was his chosen profession
                D
when they found out he was a mortician, they said we got a
G C G
special job for you in mind.

G D G
Well they offered him a job of bringing the bodies home
               C G
to their famil ies and to say on behalf of
               D G C G
US Army we are so sorry

       Em D C
He Was Bringing the boys home
G D
Nobody wanted to do it
G C D
Bringing them boys home
   G C G
to stayy yyyyy

G D
Through two dozen of our states of our country to the
G C
rich and the poor, black and white he would bring.
G D G C G
There young men home just him and the body for one final ceremon y.

G
But the strangest assignment home was when he brought this
D G
one boy home to Missouri and of course he never saw but
                                            C
he saw a picture there of him on the mantle there and he
G C G
froze and ice ran through his veins. Cause the picture of
                                                  D
their dead boy there on the mantle looked exactly like my brother
Lon and the family asked him if he could stay on an extra day and if the
                                             G C G
family ever asked the army's orders were you were to stay on.

G D
It's like he was replacing for that one extra day the one that could
G C G
never be re placed. Just for a little while they
D G C G
wanted to look at his face.

[Chorus]
Em D C
Bringing the boys home
G D
Nobody wanted to do it
G C D
Bringing them boys home
   G C G
to stayy yyyyy
