Only On Loan

Well, I am a dirt- farmers son
                               A
Raised in the Illinois bottom- lands

We didnt have much, but we had fun
                              A           D
It all came from Mom and Dads hardworking hands

                 G              D
They worked from sun-up to sun- down
                                A
To keep we younguns clothed and fed
           D           G        D
Everything we had came from the ground
                     A                D
It was hard work but nothing much was said (D7)

Now I am old and I think about back then

Living in town where it is all at hand

All the things we need just around the bend

Thanks to my folks who knew how to work the land

Now that sharecropper and his wife have passed on
                                        A
We kids grew up and had a family of our own
    D         G                        D
And they will little know of what went on
                   A                         D
Took a lifetime to learn were only here on a loan
